Counselor Etame Rosemary Etoh, Member, SW Regional Assembly

As Cameroon prepares to celebrate Women’s Day, Counselor Etame Rosemary Etoh, Member of the South West Regional House of Assembly, a shining example of female leadership, shares her insights on politics, empowerment, and the role of women in shaping the country’s future.

A trailblazer from Nguti Sub Division, Kupe Muanenguba Division, Counselor Etame Rosemary’s journey into politics was inspired by her late father, Hon. Etame George Ngoke, a prominent CPDM figure. Her academic background in International Development and Cooperation, with a focus on Women and Development, further solidified her commitment to promoting women’s participation in politics.

As a woman in a patriarchal society, Counselor Etame Rosemary has faced her share of challenges, including gender discrimination and skepticism from both men and women. However, she has overcome these obstacles through self-confidence, humility, and a willingness to collaborate.

Her advice to young women aspiring to leadership roles is simple: be assertive, have self-confidence, and shun criticisms. “Both men and women have a role to play in politics and development,” she emphasizes.

Counselor Etame Rosemary believes that women can drive Cameroon’s growth through entrepreneurship, peace-building, and political participation. She has already made strides in empowering women in her constituency, providing improved maize seeds for planting and supporting online ICT training with support from Austria, for women and girls in her community. She said as part of Women’s group in the South West Regional House of Assembly, they have organized workshops to empower underprivileged women and girls.

To encourage more women to participate in politics, she advocates for targeted leadership training, mentorship programs, financial backing, and addressing violence against women in politics.

Her message to women and girls facing obstacles is clear: “You have great potentials embedded in you. Have self-confidence, shun gender stereotypes, and stand out as actors of change for a better Cameroon.”

As Cameroon celebrates Women’s Day, Counselor Etame Rosemary’s story serves as a testament to the power of women in leadership. Her dedication to empowering women and promoting inclusive development is an inspiration to all.

Hon Etame is a holder of a Masters Degree in International Development and Cooperation with specialty in Women and Development. She is a mother, a counselor, and community builder.
